ThissectionprovidesabriefoverviewofVRRPconfigurationontheMatrixDFESeriesorNSA
device.VRRPisdefinedinRFC3678.Thisprotocoleliminatesthesinglepointoffailureinherent
inthestaticdefaultroutedenvironmentbytransferringtheresponsibilityfromonerouterto
anotheriftheoriginal
routergoesdown.
EndhostsystemsonaLANareoftenconfiguredtosendpacketstoastaticallyconfigureddefault
router.Ifthisdefaultrouterbecomesunavailable,allthehoststhatuseitastheirfirsthoprouter
becomeisolatedonthenetwork.VRRPprovidesawaytoensurethe
availabilityofanendhost’s
defaultrouter.
ThisisdonebyassigningIPaddressesthatendhostsuseastheirdefaultroutetoa“virtual
router.”Amasterrouterisassignedtoforwardtrafficdesignatedforthevirtualrouter.Ifthe
masterroutershouldbecomeunavailable,abackuproutertakesover
andbeginsforwarding
trafficforthevirtualrouter.AslongasoneoftheroutersinaVRRPconfigurationisup,theIP
addressesassignedtothevirtualrouterarealwaysavailable,andtheendhostscansendpackets
totheseIPaddresseswithoutinterruption.
